Reliable Clean City- LIC

We’re investing over $125 million to address the neighborhood’s growing need for reliable power.

About the Project

As Long Island City, Queens, experiences a growth in population, an increase in electric vehicle use, and a surge in newly electrified high-rise buildings, providing reliable energy is vital for the community to thrive. Our customers’ need for power is projected to exceed the current capacity of the grid in the area. With this in mind, we’re preparing to meet the anticipated rise in demand, by adding an additional 200 MW of energy supply.

We’re proud to partner with our customers in meeting New York’s ambitious climate goals, including a net zero-emission energy grid by 2040. Together, we’re thinking boldly about ways to strengthen and expand our energy system to accommodate new sources of renewable energy and meet increased energy demand.

Our Reliable Clean City- LIC will bring significant benefits to the community, such as:

  • A new Transmission Line: new transmission line will be constructed to connect the Vernon and Newtown substations in Long Island City, significantly improving service capacity.
  • Increased Reliability: The project will add 200 MW of capacity, enhancing electric supply and reliability for customers for decades to come.
  • Support for Future Growth: This infrastructure upgrade will facilitate ongoing development projects and the electrification of transportation and building systems, leading to cleaner air for the community.

Live Near a Project Site? Here’s What You can Expect

The project will start in winter 2025 and be completed by spring 2026.

During this time, you may experience the following:

  • Construction noise from jackhammering, digging, installing manholes, and repaving the streets
  • Temporary relocation of bike and bus lanes, as well as traffic detours
  • Temporary loss of parking spots

We’ll work as safely and efficiently as possible to minimize disruptions. Look for a flyer in your mailbox to learn how construction may affect you or your business. You may also receive emails and/or texts based on your notification preferences.
